Ergonomics is the science of how people physically interact with their environment.
In the workplace this involves looking at the design, equipment, tools, tasks, surroundings, and how they impact the individual. The aim is to create a comfortable, safe and productive workspace by fitting the work environment to the user's needs.
The design and arrangement of a workstation can greatly impact the users health, good ergonomics can eliminate or minimise discomfort and the risk of injury. Ergonomic assessments are important because they can identify the risks associated with prolonged sedentary behaviour, repetitive tasks, poor workstation setup and improper use of equipment.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, both the employer and the employee have obligations to ensure safety in the workplace. The employer must proactively identify and minimise risks, while the employee must take reasonable care of their own health and safety including reporting risks and injuries.
Every individual is different, so the best way to educate and ensure correct ergonomics is with a personal Ergonomic Workstation Assessment. Identifying risks before they are a problem and implementing changes can save time, money and pain. Reduced work related injuries, absenteeism and staff turnover, as well as improved efficiency, productivity, and morale, are the key reasons for implementing ergonomic assessments into the workplace.
An Ergonomic Workstation Assessment is an assessment of a worker working at their workstation. By observing workstation tasks we are able to identify problems and then apply solutions. Immediate adjustments and education will be given as needed, with client feedback throughout. We educate clients on correct workstation setup, the importance of correct posture, and give tips on staying healthy at work.
Following the assessment, a report will be provided detailing, observations of the workstation, any risks or issues identified, adjustments implemented or needed, and recommendations for improvement including the need for any equipment changes such as monitor risers or height adjustable desks.
The time taken for an Ergonomic Workstation Assessments depends on the needs of the individual and the workplace. Each assessment can take between 15-45 minutes.
